This body of work is based on photographs of Jake's
physical transformation during the process of gender
reassignment from female to ale. Sligh, whose past work
dealt with social and cultural, rather than physical
adaptation, initially related Jake's "passing"
from one self to another to slaves passing into freedom
and light skin blacks passing as white. While chronicling
Jake's surgical experiences, Sligh explores the concept
that a person's sexual identity is directly linked to
her or his phyisical attributes.
